St. John's, Antigua photos

Cruise ships sail right into the hear of Saint John's, the largest town on the island of Antigua. Capable of welcoming four large ships simultaneous, the small town can get very crowded on peak days. Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

Named Antigua by Christopher Columbus in 1493, the island was first ruled by the Spanish and French until the British stormed in in 1667. Slavery was abolished in 1834 and in November 1981 the islands of Antigua and neighboring Barbuda became an independent nation within the British Commonwealth. Most popular with tourists are shopping, enjoying the many beautiful beaches and discovering the ruins of Nelson's Dockyard. The island is relatively flat, the highest peak being 402 m (1,319 ft) high. Photos © 2008 Bart de Boer

The town of Saint John's is not very interesting. It has a main street full of the usual touristy jewelry stores, but if you walk a little further down the waterfront you will stumble across the real Antigua. Pictured here is Saint John's market.  Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

Antigua is best known for its pristine, powdery beaches. With 153 km (47m) of coastline, Antigua claims to have a beach for every day of the year! Photos © 2000 Bart de Boer
