Don't miss: The scrap yard on your way into town, the remains of what once was a beautiful casino on the seaside promenade and a couple of churches. That's pretty well it.

Constanta photos

After leaving the huge port area, you'll first stumble across a branch of the Bank of Transsylvania before discovering the Cathedral of Peter and Paul, built in 1895. In front of the cathedral are the ruins of the ancient city of Tomis. Downtown Constanta had an eerie, deserted feel to it when we visited it. Photos © 2008 Bart de Boer

This is Constanta's main sight: Ovid's Square. In the center of the photo is the Great Mahmudiye Mosque, built in 1910. The distinctive minaret can be visited and offers nice views on clear days. Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

A short walk from the city center are some wide sandy beaches. Constanta's most photographed building is the Art Nouveau Casino, located close to the port on the seafront promenade. Photos © 2008 Bart de Boer

The impressive Casino, built in the thirties in Art Nouveau style. It is not in use anymore and with windows smashed and paintwork washed off, it is a rather depressing memorial of happier times. Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

The Port of Constanta is the biggest Black Sea port and boasts an ultra-modern cruise ship terminal. Pictured are Holland America's Rotterdam (left) and Delphin Seereisen's Delphin (right). Photos © 2008 Bart de Boer
