Most cruise ships dock at Dubrovnik's deepwater Gruz Port, approximately 2 miles from the old center of Dubrovnik. Usually, there will be shuttle buses to bring you to town. Still, there is an even better way to arrive at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Instead of docking at Gruz Port, some cruise ships will anchor directly off the Old Town's ramparts and tender boats will drop guests off in the most beautiful part of Old Dubrovnik.

Be out on deck when you sail into Dubrovnik! A steaming cup of coffee in a deck chair looking at Croatia's beautiful coastline will set the mood for the exploration of that wonderful walled city that lies at the horizon.

As a free state, Dubrovnik became a center of culture, trade and the arts in the 15th and 16th centuries, rivaling the power of the Venetian empire. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the "Pearl of the Adriatic" was lovingly restored after the damages of the armed conflict in 1991.

Being somewhat of a tourist magnet, Dubrovnik is once again a hot destination. New clubs, restaurant and fancy boutiques spring up on a weekly basis. And with hundreds of cruise ship calls yearly, Dubrovnik once again shines as the "Pearl of the Adriatic".

Dubrovnik's main street is called Stradun. Marble-clad and rather slippery in wet weather, it can become very busy when many cruise ship visit the town. If you are looking for original Croatian artifacts, look elsewhere and explore the many back alleyways.

Dubrovnik is surrounded by massive city walls that are accessible and make for a unique 2 km (1.3 m) walking tour. This is a must when you are in Dubrovnik. In summer, bring enough bottled water as it can be scorching hot up on the walls. With lots of uneven surfaces and quite some climbing, we would discourage this walk to anyone that is not in good physical condition. But if you do decide to climb the walls and do the whole circuit, you will be rewarded with some unforgettable views.

Food! On every corner in the Old Town of Dubrovnik you will stumble across a terrace where a friendly waiter will beckon you to enjoy lunch. Go for it! If you stay away from the more touristy places around Stradun and rthe Rector's Palace, you will probably be able to have an excellent lunch at a very reasonable price.

If the captain of your cruise ship is in a jolly mood, he might take your ship for a spin right by the City Walls of Old Dubrovnik.
