A stroll down the waterfront brings you to the San Lorenzo Church. The many terraces are perfect for a cappuccino while you are waiting for the first available boat to Cinque Terre. Photo © Bart de Boer

All five towns are connected by a foot path. The further away from Portovenere, the more streneous the walk. The last stretch between Manarola and Riomaggiore (pictured above) is the easiest. And least interesting. Photo © Bart de Boer
Our recommendation: start your trek at Vernazza...Photo © Bart de Boer ...and walk all the way to Riomaggiore. Phew! Photo © Bart de Boer
You will be rewarded with views like these of the village of Corniglia, perched high on the cliffs. Be warned that you have to be in good physical shape to walk all the way! Photo © Bart de Boer
