Visby
Gotland, Sweden
Basically, Visby is one big, living open air museum. With its narrow cobblestone alleys, flower-covered houses, 13th century street plan and 3 km (2m) of medieval ramparts, Visby was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visby's city wall has 36 towers and completely surrounds the old town. Look for the city gates, the moats and fine sea views. The oldest tower still remaining is Kruttornet (Powder Tower), built in the 12th century to protect the harbor. By far the best way to discover Visby is by foot. Booking an organized shore excursion is discouraged as it means you are stuck in a tiny alley with 25 people at a time. Take your time to stroll around Visby at your leisure instead. It is a relatively small town, so you don't have to worry about getting lost.
